The Body Exfoliation Method That Will Change Your Life

Yes. That’s right. I said… it will change your life.

Two words: Dry Brushing.

This traditional Ayurvedic dry massage is referred to as Garshana and has been around for thousands of years as a means to exfoliate and detoxify our body’s largest organ, the SKIN!

Why is it so great?

Dry massage has a number of lovely benefits:

  • refreshes the skin
  • stimulates the lymphatic system
  • enhances blood circulation
  • releases accumulated toxins
  • encourages the body’s natural moisture response
  • breaks up fatty deposits (bye bye, cellulite!)
  • energizes the body
  • exfoliates dead skin cells, promoting the production of collagen
  • Oh, and the best part… it only takes FIVE minutes!

What do I need?

You will need natural silk gloves, a soft sponge, or a dry brush. (I use a Mio Dry Brush made of bamboo and natural boar bristles. It has massage nodules so it really gets in there to break up that adipose fat in the hips and thighs that can turn into unsightly orange peel skin! Yikes!)

When should I dry brush?

The ideal time to dry brush is in the morning before you shower, so that you can rinse off the impurities loosened by the massage.

How do I perform the Garshana?

Follow these steps:

  1. Starting with your extremeties (I start with my feet and work up toward the heart – this helps drain the lymph) massage your entire body, excluding your face, chest, and heart. Be sure to avoid any areas where the skin is broken, inflamed, or sensitive.
  2. Use circular strokes on the stomach and joints (shoulders, elbows, knees, wrists, hips, and ankles), and long sweeping strokes on the arms and legs.
  3. Apply light pressure where the skin is thin, such as the underarms, and harder pressure where the skin is thicker, such as the soles of the feet.
  4. Complete your Garshana with a shower. (Tip: hang a eucalyptus plant from your shower head. You will reap the benefits of this amazing plant when the steam releases its natural oils! When inhaled, eucalyptus naturally aids in clearing nasal and throat congestion)

To enhance the release of toxins, end with a few cycles of hot then cold water. This will stimulate the blood circulation and further invigorate the skin.

Happy Brushing!
